Possibly England’s most prominent cathedral city, pretty Canterbury is a hot spot on the tourist trail and one of the most popular cities to see in the lush landscape of the county of Kent. The spectacular Canterbury Cathedral dominates the city’s skyline and is one of England’s largest cathedrals. With parts of the superb structure dating back to the 11th century, admire the stunning stained glass windows that illustrate the miracles of Saint Thomas. View the spot where the Saint, also known as Archbishop Thomas Becket, was murdered; also the end point for the pilgrimage famously depicted in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Visit the nearby ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, founded in 600 AD and St Martin’s Church.
Discover the hidden gems of Canterbury by boat on an historic river tour where you’ll be rowed along the River Stour by your guide, enjoying the city from a unique and truly scenic perspective. Stroll along the pretty banks of the river to the serenely beautiful Westgate Gardens, home to a 200-year old Oriental plane tree or wander the streets of the medieval city centre, stopping in for lunch of one of many cafes, pubs and restaurants.
Just outside of Canterbury, if you head south-east you’ll end up in Dover. Here you can witness the famed White Cliffs of Dover and the impressive Dover Castle with its claustrophobic network of secret wartime tunnels. Head 30 minutes west and you’ll find yourself at the magnificent Leeds Castle, with its sprawling expanse of attractive parklands and formal gardens. Wander inside the beautifully decorated interior of the castle or explore the attractions on the castle grounds with the Maze and Underground Grotto, the Squires Courtyard Playground or the Knights’ Realm Playground.
