With a population of 13 million and growing, the bustling cultural metropolis that is Buenos Aires offers an eclectic experience not often anticipated by the everyday traveller. Drawing on a vast array of cultural influences that stem in large from its Spanish founding in the 16th century, the Argentine capital has been further inspired by other European nations as well as Britain and North America; however it has never forgotten its traditional roots. These factors have combined to create a city brimming with energy and confidence that offers more than the traditional Latin American experience.
Buenos Aires is an exciting mix of old and new, with economic growth spawning its impressive development and street art a feature that adds to the vibrancy of the city. Its architectural heritage however has remained just as strong and significant as ever, and serves as an extensive attraction for those interested in the visual history of the city. Buenos Aires is also known for its theatrical life with nearly 300 live shows and plays to tantalise locals and travellers alike every weekend. Street level is a hive of activity, with local cafes, street performances and artistic hubs providing total immersion into this unique South American culture.
If you can’t catch a show, be sure to at least marvel at the wonder of the ornate Teatro Colon with a guided tour. For similar grandeur, take a stroll through the nearby neighborhoods of Recoleta or Palermo to immerse yourself in the cultural heart of the city. Or, for a quicker way to get around, why not hire a bike for the day and experience as much of the city as possible without breaking the budget, and work off the calories from the Empanadas you devoured for lunch.
Before Che Guevara, Diego Maradona and Pope Francis, one of Argentina’s most famous citizens was the glamorous Women’s Rights Activist and second wife of the former Argentine President, Eva Perón, more commonly known as Evita. Visit the Museo Evita which immortalises the heroine with photos, videos, books and many prized items from her wardrobe. Her decorated tomb can be found at the fascinating and beautiful Cementerio de la Recoleta.
