The state of Nevada was established by silver miners. When it became the first state in the USA to legalise gambling, in 1931, the state switched from silver to tourist gold – and lots of it. Today, Las Vegas is a wild, exhilarating mix of gambling, entertainment, arts, gourmet dining and much more. Dizzying megaresorts and replicas of famous sights, such as the Eiffel Tower and Empire State Building, line iconic Las Vegas Boulevard - commonly known as “The Strip”. The city boasts 15 out of the world’s 25 largest hotels (by room count), along with a seemingly endless array of casinos, bars and restaurants.
Las Vegas is nicknamed Sin City for a reason - there is no shortage of options for indulging your every hedonistic whim. Try your luck at the pokies or at the roulette table, or party the night away at Vegas’ many bars and nightclubs. Take in a show and enjoy the entertainment that Las Vegas has been renowned for since Frank Sinatra graced its stages in the 1950s. There are hundreds of options to choose from, such as live performances from A-list singers, magic shows, Cirque du Soleil and much more.
Las Vegas also has plenty of quirkier attractions, such as the Liberace Museum. Meanwhile, history buffs can learn about the state’s nuclear history with a visit the Atomic Testing Museum, or take a trip to the nearby Nevada Test Site. Of course, there are also plenty of shopping options for anyone in the mood for some retail therapy.
If you’re feeling impulsively romantic, you can marry the love of your life within a day at one of the city’s famous wedding chapels. The Little White Wedding Chapel – which is open 24 hours - has seen numerous celebrity couples tie the knot (such as Demi Moore and Bruce Willis). Drive-through weddings are even available. Viva Las Vegas!
