Best-known for tulips, windmills, clogs, cheese and, more notoriously, its pursuits of a hedonistic nature found in coffee shops and the red-light district; The Netherlands offers a wealth of things for tourists to see and do.
A half day tour will get you out of the city of Amsterdam and into the countryside. Visit the quaint fishing village of Volendam, where you’ll see locals wearing traditional clothing, and can watch how cheese is made using traditional methods. Enjoy Marken, an old-fashioned fishing town where its old wooden houses are built on stilts. Marvel as a shoemaker makes a pair of clogs before your eyes. Call in to the charming village of Zaanse Schans with its many colourful windmills.
If visiting in spring, it’s worth a trip out to Keukenhof where you’ll find the world’s largest flower garden with a staggering six million plus bulbs and blooms on display. The scenic drive to get there alone is worth the trip as you pass by vibrant fields of tulips. Grab one of the free pushbikes available for use and explore the beautiful De Hoge Veluwe National Park. With over 5,400 hectares of heathland, woodland and drift sand, the park features a spectacular museum and wildlife including deer and wild boar.
