Malta is an archipelago located in the Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. Renowned for its warm, kind-hearted and hospitable people, it was part of the British Empire for 160 years until as recently as 1964. Home to some of the most impressive prehistoric sites in the world, a highlight is the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum – a 5,000 year old underground necropolis carved into rock that holds the remains of over 7,000 people and a collection of their items such as beads, amulets and pottery. The Tarxien Temples is a complex of four megalithic structures built between 3600 and 2500BC. Constructed from stone blocks, they feature carefully carved images of animals and swirling spiral patterns.
Malta has a rich and turbulent history, thanks in part to the island’s geographic location. Today however, it’s popular with tourists wanting to combine a relaxing beach holiday with history and culture. Compact in size, it’s easy to explore the many ruins, discover small and quiet coves with beautiful surroundings, or get active with some mountain biking, hiking, rock-climbing and windsurfing. Malta has some spectacular dive sites with scuttled ships, sunken World War II bombers and dramatic underwater caves.
When the sun has set, a vibrant nightlife can be found, particularly near the capital city of Valetta featuring open-air clubs with big-name DJ’s from all over the world performing. Malta’s sister-island Gozo is said to be what Malta used to be like: rural and peaceful. It’s the best place to stay if you want a peaceful holiday with beautiful beaches and countryside views. With a laid-back charm, you can explore quiet villages with their old Italianate architecture and timeless tranquility, see horse and cart wander down delightful country lanes or stay in centuries-old, character-filled farmhouse with all the mod-cons you could ask for amongst incredible scenery.
