A compact city, the capital of Helsinki is easily explored on foot. Surrounded by sea on three sides, the ocean is an integral part of Helsinki life. With nearly 100km of shoreline and over 300 islands, many of these islands are accessible for recreational use and delightful to explore in summer.

Discover Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress, a huge fortress that was built off the coast of the city in 1748; visit the open-air museum of Seurasaari Island which is the recreational playground for Helsinki’s inhabitants; wander around Helsinki Zoo on the island of Korkeasaari; dine at one of many unique island restaurants – particularly good for seafood, or relax on sightseeing cruise through Helsinki’s archipelago.

Stroll down the tree-lined promenade of Esplanadi admiring the statues and fountains or just sit back and enjoy the street performers and musicians. One third of Helsinki consists of parks, which are great for people watching on a warm summer day or frolicking in the snow during winter.

Sweat it out with some locals in one of the many public saunas or make the most of the frosty winter weather ice-skating at the Icepark. Enjoy the city’s stunning display of Art Nouveau architecture; experience some peace and stillness amidst the hustle and bustle in one of the city’s churches – especially worthy of a visit is the ‘Rock Church’, or behold the abstract Sibelius Monument, a fascinating structure that acts as a monument to Finland’s famous composer, Jean Sibelius.
