Small by Australian standards, the compact Australian Capital Territory is just under 2,400 square kilometres and home to Australia’s capital, Canberra. Built around Lake Burley Griffin, the city is surrounded by parklands, nature reserves and forest. Sitting on the shore of the lake is the strikingly modern Parliament House, located inside the circle of Capital Hill.
On the opposite side of the lake sits the uniquely designed National Museum of Australia, a social history museum that explores the land, nation and people of Australia. The touching Australian War Memorial commemorates the sacrifice of Australians who died in war, and combines a museum, a shrine and extensive archives.
For something adventurous, explore the pristine beauty of the Australian Alps in Namadgi National Park where you can bushwalk, 4WD, fish, mountain bike, abseil and visit ancient Aboriginal sites, said to be more than 21,000 years old.
Vineyards can be found all over the ACT where you can spend a leisurely weekend admiring local art and craft galleries before teaming wine with local produce in one of many boutique wineries and restaurants.
