Imagine fiery sunsets over dusty plains, the hypnotic and primal rhythm of beating drums, the pounding hoof beats of a herd of zebra and the elegant gait of a pride of lion, colorful tribal villages and the warm smiles and friendly waves of the local children – this is Africa; an intoxicating, culturally diverse and historically rich country that will enchant and mesmerise you.
From the turquoise coloured waters and white sand beaches of Zanzibar to the red sand desert of the Sahara; the thunderous crashing of the mighty Victoria Falls to the soothing lapping of ripples on the reed-filled waters of the Okavango Delta; the graceful and rapid stride of the leopard to the heavy and laboured walk of an elephant; from poverty-stricken shanty towns to great temples and tombs in Egypt – discover all this and so much more on a holiday in Africa.
You can fly directly into Africa from Australia with Qantas and South African Airways. Alternatively turn the journey into an adventure with a detour via Asia or the Middle East flying with Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific. The internal air network in Africa is fairly comprehensive and can be the safest and most efficient way of travelling around the large country. Car hire can be expensive with high insurance excess though renting a car in South Africa is relatively cheap. There are train and bus networks throughout Africa depending on where you want to travel to, though don’t expect the same standard you would get in Australia and avoid the touts at the stations.
Sit back and let someone else do the driving on a coach, 4WD or truck tour. With such large distances between destinations and sites, and some potentially dangerous situations you could get yourself into along the way, it offers great peace of mind to know you have an experienced driver and guide at your disposal. There are a large number of tour companies in Africa with varying standards of accommodation and transportation styles. The level of service can also vary greatly. Some operators will do everything for their travellers, while, on many of the overland journeys, you will be expected to go on a roster to help out with meals for the group and contribute to packing up the campsite. From a pop-up tent under the stars, to luxurious bush camps and lavish hotels, whatever your taste and budget, you will find accommodation to meet your expectations, all over Africa.
