Infamously thrust into the history books when it was destroyed by an atomic bomb that was dropped on the city in 1945, Hiroshima was declared the “City of Peace” in 1949 by Japanese Parliament.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the reborn city has made an impressive recovery, even rebuilding its monuments of historical heritage like Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Gardens. Explore Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, one of the most prominent features of the city and dedicated to the victims of the bombing, and the A-Bomb Dome – the remains of the former Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall that is now considered a symbol of the city.
Visit the solemn Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims and the Peace Memorial Museum, both chilling reminders of the devastation that took place in Hiroshima. Visit the beautiful neighbouring island of Miyajima that is home to one of the most photographed locations in Japan, the Itsukushima Shrine. One of the most significant shrines in all of Japan, it’s the only shrine in the world that has a shrine building and torii gate in the middle of the sea.
