28 October 2016 was the date I arrived in Winnipeg and realised a lifelong dream of seeing polar bears in the wild.christa-kinnear-polar-bears

The next day myself, four PHT clients and 20 others left on a small charter flight. We arrived in Churchill, populated by just 813, to a wind-chill factor of -20 degrees. On our way to the tundra we got stuck in a “bear jam” – indication of activity ahead!

Our accommodation at the Lazy Bear Lodge was welcoming and delightful, with wood cabins and roaring fire places.

The next morning we eagerly set off, in the hope of seeing a bear or two. Nothing could have prepared me for the experience of seeing these beautiful creatures up close.

Day two we explored Churchill, learnt about the wilderness and why the bears habitate the area, and enjoyed a fabulous nightime dog-sledding trip. The highlight was day three when this fabulous bear I’ve named Aurora, stood right up at the van just below me. A few tears escaped as Aurora left a paw-print on my soul and heart full of gratitude for this amazing experience.
