Peru’s capital exhibits impressive urban planning, well laid out streets, mighty skyscrapers and retains a beautifully green landscape, though areas of poverty are still evident. Located on the spectacular west shore of the country, Lima’s impressive coastline offers a stunning contrast against the backdrop of the city and conveys the enjoyable feel of a resort town.
Despite its size and modernity, Lima’s UNESCO World Heritage listed Old Town is the soul of the city. Cuidad de los Reyes – meaning “City of the Kings” – was in the 18th century the most important Spanish establishment in South America, and retains a feel of grandeur expected of a place that was once the centre of influence in the region. Its impressive 18th century buildings such as the La Catedral de Lima and the incredible arena of Plaza de Toros de Acho are must see items in the Old Town, the latter of which, if you are interested, often showcases traditional bullfighting. The city is one embedded with a strong Latin American culture that will please the eyes, ears and mouths of travellers. With new apartment complexes and parks interspersed with ancient Inca ruins, Lima has a surprise around every corner.
